A Passion for Dance

Join us at Dalkeith Palace on Saturday 26 August at 6.30pm for a celebration of the life of Elizabeth Montagu (1743-1827), 3rd Duchess of Buccleuch, through dance, music, poetry and costume from the Georgian Age.

This trove of delights will feature Historical Dance group Autrefois and the Edinburgh Quadrille Society, performing Baroque and Regency dance, including compositions by Elizabeth’s own ward, Ignatius Sancho, the first African to publish his music in Britain. We are especially fortunate to welcome Early Music Vocalist Héloïse Bernard, who will be accompanied by Tim Macdonald on Baroque violin and square piano with Mark Summers on cello.

Tickets cost £18 or £15 for concessions (students, OAPs and EQS members)

The Decorum of Voice: Music for a Renaissance Princess

The Spinacino Consort presents a concert of the finest music from Renaissance Italy, exploring the influence of Isabella d’Este, 'La Prima Donna del Mondo'. Born in Ferrara to the d’Este dynasty, Isabella enjoyed music lessons from some of the finest Franco-Flemish composers. However, it was her passion for the native Italian forms of sung improvised poetry that led to her patronage of Italian artists and the development of frottola. This musical melting pot created some of the most exciting and beautiful music ever composed.

Away Vain Warld: The Music and Poetry of Elizabeth Melville with the Spinacino Consort

The Scottish Reformation: a time of conflict and transformation. During Mary Queen of Scots' reign, the Catholic-French court clashed with the newly independent Kirk. The court of James VI showed increasing English influence, and after he left Scotland to unite the crowns, traditional Scottish music increasingly became an influence on Scottish nobility. The Spinacino Consort explores this period through the prism of the poetry of Elizabeth Melville, the Scottish woman to see her poetry in print, and who wrote contrafactum on psalms, English lute song and French Air de Cour.
